Welcome to Global STS Conference 2019

The 2nd International Conference on Global STS (GlobalSTS 2.0) is a sequel to its first one held at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in March 2014. It was organized in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of NTU’s School of Humanities and Social Sciences. To  follow  up  the  success  of  the  2014  meeting,  GlobalSTS  2.0  aims  to  extend  the exchanges of scholarly works of STS researchers around the world that emphasize transnational dimensions of science, technology, and society. In its inception, GlobalSTS was prompted by concerns that while STS has succeeded in elucidating much of the minute sociological structure of technoscience, it has paid less attention to how science and technology is constituted across and between multiple centers and multiple locales.

GlobalSTS is motivated by the growing number of researchers studying global processes of science and technology–as well as their objects–are based outside of the European and  North American  institutions  and  sites  once considered  the  “centers”  of  scientific production.  In addition to the globalization of science and technology, the globalization of science  and  technology  studies  is  also  a  significant  process  that  must  be  explicitly reflected upon. This conference highlights the practices of STS scholarship that bring distinctive perspectives to the study of global STS.   We argue that these differences in perspective are not limited to an empirical “filling in” of parts of the globe that had not previously been studied by STS scholars.  Rather, these different standpoints and points of view challenge many of the core theoretical presumptions of the STS field. Thus, the main objective of GlobalSTS 2.0 is to invite STS scholars from various backgrounds and discplines to engage in lively debates and productive exchanges in the academic event, which takes place in an unsual place outside EuroAmerican continents where different scales of globality are located.
